Korean Hand Energetics (KHE), sometimes called Korean Hand Therapy, is a micro-system used in Korean medicine that is astoundingly effective at remedying both acute and chronic pain, instantaneously. This is a system in which I received personal instruction while studying for my Masters in Oriental Medicine by one of the leading proponents of KHE in North America. Not all acupuncturists are trained in this unique system. Once I began to use KHE clinically, it quickly became a first-line of defense against pain.
KHE was discovered in the 1970’s and was quickly recognized as being so effective at addressing pain that it was adopted by the Korean military to address acute pain from injury in the battlefield. In time it became an integral part of Korean Medicine as a whole, as it is often just as effective at treating long-term, chronic pain – but especially pain that is elicited by movement.
KHE uses the hand as a reflection of the entire body in the same way that Chinese medicine practitioners use the ear or how reflexologists use the foot. One of the virtues of KHE is that it is painless and that anyone can do it (though the process of palpating to find the correct point on the hand can be a bit ouchy). We tape magnets or seeds to the hand or sometimes simply stimulate the hand physically for instant relief. In addition to being virtually painless it is a tool that is taught to clients so that they can take these techniques home and apply it themselves in times of pain or imbalance.
Another virtue of KHE is the level of detail by which the body is represented! Below is a map of the body according to KHE. As you can see, every acupuncture point on the body is projected directly onto the hand so that there is a 1:1 relationship between the acupuncture points on the body and the corresponding KHE points on the hand.
